Why does Winston have conflicting emotions when he sees the dark-haired girl from the fiction department fall down.

• Winston thinks she is spying on him, and some of his fear and hatred of Big Brother has transferred to her. He also has a more human reaction of sympathy for someone who is hurt.

• Winston feels spite for her, because he is attracted to her but can't have her!

• Winston knows that she's only doing it to catch him in a trap. If Winston helps her it will show he is weak and most definitely a thought criminal.

Why is Winston stunned when he reads what the girl wrote on the note she gave him?

• It wasn't written in Newspeak!

• The message "I Love You" was literally the last thing he expected to see written on the note.

• He was stunned because he had no idea what it meant!

• Winston was stunned because she declared her love for him but it wasn't even Valentine's Day!

Why is it so difficult for Winston to meet the girl?

• If Winston's wife had found out, he surely would have been arrested.

Why does Winston trust Julia?

• Julia seems very experienced, and he really has no choice unless he is going to reject the relationship.

• She told Winston that she knows Big Brother personally and thus can get away with more.

• She threated to turn him in to the Thought Police if he didn't listen to her.

Why is Julia attracted to Winston?

• Julia has no idea what it means to be "attracted" to someone. She just seems to "like" Winston but she doesn't know why.

• She's really attracted to men who don't shave.

• Julia saw in his face that he was against the Party and took a chance. Ironically, this skill would actually have made her a good Thought Police officer.

• Julia is attracted to dangerous men who don't play by the rules!

• Julia is really good at checkers but not so good at Chess.

• She is clever about playing the role of a good Party member but is actually rebellious and skilled at circumventing rules and finding black market goods. She doesn't like to read and she is quite uninterested in politics.

• She is a loyal Party member who is trying to trick Winston into committing a Thought Crime.
