The Electoral College

• functions largely independently of the major political parties
• provide for a winner-take-all system of election in all 50 states
• requires that the candidate who receives a plurality of the votes (the most) will be elected to the office of president
• requires that a candidate receive a majority (270 electoral votes) to be elected president.

This role shows the president as the representative of the people.
