MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

The Andes mountain range is the longest continental mountain range on Earth, stretching over 4000 miles along the western edge of the South American continent where it meets the Pacific Ocean (see the light gray area of the figure to the right). The mountain range is made up of many stratovolcanoes, some extinct and some active. A set of rock samples was collected from five different Andes volcanoes (shown by the white X’s in the figure). These rocks are all a similar gray color, and have the same composition. Geologists wonder if this huge mountain range was created by the same tectonic process. The linear pattern of volcanoes suggests the Andes mountain range could be located along a tectonic boundary. What type of plate tectonic boundary would you expect to find where oceanic and continental plates meet?
A convergent boundary, because there’s really only one type of plate; an oceanic plate is the same as continental but is covered in water.
A convergent boundary, because this type of boundary forms where ocean and continental plates meet.
A divergent boundary, because volcanic activity only occurs near that type of boundary.
A divergent boundary, because there’s really only one type of plate; an oceanic plate is the same as continental but is covered in water.
