What is Media?

• All the ways that large groups of people get and share information (TV, books, the internet, newspapers, phones, etc.)

• All the ways that adults get and share information (TV, books, the internet, newspapers, phones, etc.)

Which three questions should you ask yourself when making healthy media choices?

• Where? Why? How?

• What? When? How much?

• How are you? How far? How much?

What exactly does media balance mean?

• watching TV during most of my free time

• video games, all day, everyday

• using media for a certain amount of time, so that I still feel healthy

• playing on my tablet until midnight

Last night, Mia's mom gave her permission to watch her favorite YouTube channel, and she stayed up late watching videos. When she got to school today, she fell asleep during art class (her favorite subject). Did Mia make a healthy media choice?

• Yes. She was able to talk to her friends about the videos she watched last night.

• No. She didn't watch as many YouTube videos as she wanted to.

• No. Her choice to stay up late caused her to miss doing something she likes.

• Yes. She really needed the nap.

 

Imagine you are Mia's friend. What advice would you give her to help her have media balance?

• Do not watch any videos. It is not a good choice.

• Watch the same amount of videos. YouTube is more important than art class.

• Watch fewer videos so she can get a full night's sleep.

 

Clara receives a message from someone asking for her address. The person says she works with Clara's mom, and she wants to send her mom a birthday card. What should Clara do?

• She should ask a trusted adult for permission before responding.

• She should go ahead and send her address. It's OK because the person says she works with Clara's mom.

• She should send her a fake address because she doesn't really know who the person is.
