"How does the author's choice to reveal the woman's blindness at the end help develop the theme?"

The author's choice to reveal the woman’s blindness helped to develop the overall theme of the story that fear of other’s perspectives of you shouldn’t drive your actions. In paragraph 2, the story states, “How much had she seen, Theodoric queried to himself; and in any case what on earth must she think of his present posture.” This quote shows that he was more concerned about the woman's opinion and thoughts of him rather than the immediate “issue” at hand. In paragraph 19, the story also states, “but being blind makes one so helpless at a railway station.” This quote shows that the woman was not concerned or looking at Theodoric because she is unable to see. In conclusion, just because something embarrassing is happening to you, doesn't mean that people are watching or concerned with you and the difficult task you’re facing.
