Annotations - Writer's Craft

Alliteration - this is when the same letter sounds are used at the start of words over and over. Choose the example below that has alliteration in it.

• I went down to the jungle to find some berries.

• I went down to the scary, green, jungle to find some berries.

• I went down to the jingle, jangle, jungle to find some berries.

• I went down to the creepy, dark, jungle to find some berries.

Repetition - this is when the writer uses the same words or phrases over and over. Choose the example that has repetition:

• The little girl lost her doll, her most favourite doll in the whole world. What will she do without her doll?

• The little girl lost her doll, her most favourite toy in the whole world. What will she do without her?

• The little girl lost her doll, her most favourite one in the whole world. What will she do without it?

• The little girl lost her most favourite doll in the whole world. What will she do without her?

Rhyme - this is when the end of a line sound similar to the end of the next line. Or when lines skip and every two lines rhyme and sound similar. Choose the example that has rhyme:

• Some days I jump

  Some days I walk

  Some days it's fun

  Some days I talk

• Some days I run

  Some days I walk

  Some days it's fun

  Some days I talk

• Some days I run

  Some days I don't

  Some days it's hard

Assonance - this is when the same letter sounds are used a lot in one sentence. These letter sounds are the vowel sounds like "aye". You hear them when you read it out loud. Choose the example that has assonance:

• I'm afraid I'm crazy and have to stay.

• I'm afraid I'm silly and have to run.

• I'm worried I'm crazy and have to sleep.

• I'm happy I'm lost and have to hide.

Consonance - is similar to assonance, where the sounds are repeated in lots of words in a sentence. This time it is the consonants (not vowel) sounds. Find the example that has consonance:

• I'm a little sad and very worried.

• I'm a little bit tired and totally stressed.

• I'm a little anxious and extremely scared.

• I'm a lot happy and pretty relaxed.

Antonyms - words that give the opposite meaning to a word. Choose the word that is opposite to strange:

• weird

• unfamiliar

• normal

• eery

Synonyms - new words that have the same meaning. Choose the word that is a synonym for excited.

• tired

• bored

• lame

• thrilled

Themes - the overall mood and feelings that go along with a story, or part of a story. Sometimes we can learn something from the themes. Find the example that has a theme of friendship.

• I sat alone in my room and played my favourite game. I got my highest score yet!

• I can't wait to go back to school so I can hang out with my friends. They always know how to cheer me up and look out for me.

• My family holiday isn't going as planned. The airport lost our luggage and my sister is driving me crazy.

• I get to finally visit my grandparents, they feed me the best dinners and desserts, I feel so lucky.
