Answer explanation

Red cells are produced continuously in the marrow of certain bones. As stated above, in adults the principal sites of red cell production, called erythropoiesis, are the marrow spaces of the vertebrae, ribs, breastbone, and pelvis. Within the bone marrow the red cell is derived from a primitive precursor, or erythroblast, a nucleated cell in which there is no hemoglobin.

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone, naturally produced by the peritubular cells of the kidney, that stimulates red blood cell production.

Preparation of

Platelets from Whole Blood

Platelet-rich plasma is separated from Whole Blood by “light-spin” centrifugation

and the platelets are concentrated by “heavy-spin” centrifugation, with subsequent removal of supernatant plasma.

Freshly collected Whole Blood, obtained by phlebotomy as described in Method 6.3, in a collection unit

with two integrally attached transfer containers. The final container must be a plastic approved for platelet storage. Keep blood at room temperature (20 to 24 C) before separating platelet-rich plasma from the red cells.

This separation must take place within 8 hours of phlebotomy. (AABB Technical Manual 15th ed).

In contrast, Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is plasma that has been separated from a unit of whole blood within 6 to 8 hours of collection, and has been rapidly frozen and maintained at all times at a temperature of –20 °C or lower. (WHO, 2005)

The average life span of red blood cells is 120 days. If you donate regularly every 3 months, you will have new red blood cells every __ days.

Answer explanation

Media Image

Human red blood cells are formed mainly in the bone marrow and are believed to have an average life span of approximately 120 days.

For sure within the life span of red blood cells many cellular properties change leading to aged mixed cell populations in the circulation. Although red blood cells seem to be genetically terminated by the time they become red blood cells there are surprisingly versatile remodeling processes happening during their life span.

The minimum interval between 2 donations is 12 weeks (3 months). This interval allows our body Val allows our body to restore it iron stock. Platelet (aphaeresis) donors may donate more frequently than - as often as once every two weeks and up to 24 times per year. This is because the body replenishes platelets and plasma more quickly than red cells. Platelets will return to normal levels. (NVBSP)
