Qualitative Observations

• Observations that DESCRIBE- based on the use your senses. (without numbers and units)

• We change on thing and we measure one thing
• an educated guess (backed by RESEARCH) to explain an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation.
• A test we use to determine in a scientific question is good to use for an actual data gathering experiment.

Quantitative Observations

• Do you know how to USE those tools?
• Are you MEASURING/ GATHERING DATA about something that will answer your question?
• Observations based on measurements. They include numbers and units.
• WHAT- a statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes some aspects of the universe. A scientific law always applies under the same conditions, and implies that there is a causal relationship involving its elements.

Inference

• A logical explanation of observations- reached on the basis of evidence & reasoning.

Hypothesis

• Are you hurting anyone or anything in this investigation? Is it safe?
• The process of seeing or taking notice of something using our senses. (Qualitative and Quantitative)
• Do you have the TOOLS you need to do your investigation?
• an educated guess (backed by RESEARCH) to explain an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by a science experiment or investigation.

Theory

• Do you have the TOOLS you need to do your investigation?
• Is your proposed investigation SAFE?
• An explanation of observations reached on the basis of evidence, reasoning and logic.
• HOW or WHY something happens in nature- a well researched explanation of some aspect of the natural world. Theories are based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Can be rewritten or disregarded.

Law
