• Put the whole number in front of the decimal and divide out the fraction and put that answer behind the decimal

Answer explanation

Although they are both correct, it is easier to take your whole number and place it in front of the decimal and only divide out the fraction given. Turning the mixed number to an improper fraction first just creates more work.
