When a new patient attends a first wellness appointment...

• When a new patient attends a first wellness appointment, the appointment is the first wellness visit they've ever attended in their lives.

• When a new patient attends a first wellness appointment, the appointment is their first wellness visit according to their history with their health plan or health insurance coverage.

Answer explanation

If in 2021, 5-year-old Patient attends a wellness appointment with coverage from HPMG, the visit is marked with 99383. But if next year, the patient attends her wellness, and instead of HPMG has HPSM, 99383 is still marked on the appointment type, because HPSM will not have the patient's wellness records yet. 99383 simultaneously tells HPSM that an initial health assessment was performed on this date.
