Mean/Median/Mode Review

You need the mean for a set of data.

You don't know the actual individual data values.

You DO have the data separated into classes (groups).

How can you estimate the mean?

• Use the midpoint of each class (group) for all data in that group.

• You can't because the individual data values are unknown.

• Figure out the individual data values first.

• Make up a number that sounds reasonable since it's only an estimate.

How do you find the midpoint of any two numbers?

• Add and divide by two

• Subtract and divide by two

• Pick a number somewhere in between the two numbers

• Multiply by two and subtract
