What is imperialism?

• A process where industry begin to be dominated by machine production of goods

• The belief that certain races were more fit to survive, and enjoy wealth and success

• A policy in which a stronger nation takes control of weaker countries politically, economically, or socially.

• The policy where countries build up their militaries

How did industrialization lead to imperialism?

• Industrialized countries were competing for markets to sell goods and raw materials for factories

• Working long hours in a factory led to people being stronger, more fierce soldiers

• There was a trade system established that connected many countries

• The textile industry could create new uniforms, which helped the military grow

What did racism and social darwinism have to do with imperialism?

• Imperialism resulted with a new idea about racism

• Seeing all of the racism in the world motivated Europeans to go and spread equal access to resources

• Africans thought they were superior and attacked Europeans with their new maxim guns

• It motivated Europeans, who believed they were the superior race, to go spread their culture

What is social darwinism?

• The belief that certain human races are more fit to survive, and experience wealth and success

• The belief that all people should be connected to each other socially

• The belief that animals evolve and make adaptations

• The belief that all people will struggle and have a difficult time

What allowed Europeans to take over large parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America?

• Due to industrialization, there were simply more Europeans to overwhelm smaller societies

• Technological superiority, such as steam engines, machine guns, and quinine

• Europeans were more organized and more literate, so could communicate better
