When the first GROUP of Puritans are hung, how do the people of Salem act as they watch them hang?

• The villagers begin to weep

• They start to throw food at the people being hung

• They start to sing a gospel and say the Lord's Prayer

• The laugh at them, yell at them as in cheering and happiness, and the act like they are watching a sporting event

When Giles Corey is pressed to death(rocks set on top of him), why does the court choose to do this to him?

• The court wants to know what person accused PUTNAM of accusing George Jacobs of Witchcraft, so Putnam could get his land.

• They want to break and destroy his wife, so they "press," CRUSH him so his wife will confess to Witch Craft.

• He has the demons of the devil in him, so they PRESS him, to get them out

• The Puritan's do NOT like wrinkles and want his clothes pressed, as the wrinkles drive them crazy

Why does Abigail accuse Reverend John Hale of Witchcraft?

• She sees him as a man of power, & if she can get him accussed & killed, then he will be one LESS man she has to DEAL with.

• She knows that he doesn't believe her story, & she wants to condemn him first-before the TRUTH comes out!

• She wants to marry him & his wife will leave him if he is NOT a Reverend.

• She wants his horse and his jealous of how beautiful his hair is.

When does Judge Danforth probably realize, that Abigail is a liar, for the first time?

• When she accuses the Reverend Hale of being a witch.

• When John Proctor dies

• When Judge Sewall starts to cry.

• When she starts to bark like a dog.

The people of Salem Village, no longer have FAITH in the court system, why?

• All of the people in Salem have been bewitched and want nothing to do with the truth of Christ

• The court has been banished from the town b/c the Reverend's were all found to be stealing.

• The court house has been burned to the ground by the devil

• The court has accused to many people, & the people have refused to confess, b/c they are not guilty & refuse to be guilty. Also, the people of the village are sick of hangings, lying, death, & hysteria.

When Reverend Danforth says," Who weeps for these weeps for corruption," what is he saying about the justice system of Salem that is ironic?

SITUATIONAL IRONY is: When an EVENT or OUTCOME takes place that is the opposite of what a person expected...

• It is ironic that he would say this, b/c he is the reason that Elizabeth is pregnant!

• It is ironic that he would say this, b/c he is the WHOLE reason that Abigail is in Salem.

• It is ironic that he would say this, when he is the ONE who represents JUSTICE in the court & he is the ONE who has sentences these people to death, knowing the system he is part of is CORRUPT & what he has done in the trials is WRONG & CORRUPT.

• It is ironic that he would say this, b/c the corruption that has occurred is b/c he is the witch in Salem, not the people who haev been HUNG.

Why does Reverend Parris BEG John Proctor to confess?

• B/c Reverend loves Abigail too.

• B/c if John confesses to being part of the Witchcraft, then the Reverend will not see another innocent person die, when the whole situation is partly his fault and he REGRETS what he has allowed to happen in SALEM.

• B/c Reverend Parris wants to be hung himself

• John Proctor and him have GOLD to gather together

What did Reverend Hale want Elizabeth to get John to do?

• To admit that he committed adultery

• Admit that he had committed witchcraft and CONFESS, so that John would NOT die

• To get John to admit that he gave Abigail a child

• Reverend Hale was hoping that Elizabeth could run away with John, if they got to speak

When John says, " I have GIVEN my SOUL," "LEAVE MY NAME," what is he asking Judge Danforth to do?

• He wants the DEVIL to take his NAME, his money, and his SOUL

• He wants to be allowed to leave Salem with his family and never look back

• He wants the Judge to not share his written confession with the town, as it will destroy his NAME and his soul is already destroyed.

• He wants to see Judge Danforth HUNG for being such a horrible man of the courts
