In the 1700s, ice cream started to become popular in the USA. Adverts began to appear in newspapers for a growing number of specialist ice-cream shops, which made and sold their own frozen desserts. As before, however, ice cream was only affordable for society’s elite. The first American president, George Washington, was known to enjoy ice cream.
