A table (cache) retained by a Layer 3 network device to identify IP addresses and their associated MAC addresses on IPv4 networks.

When a device requests a MAC address to send a packet to another workstation in the broadcast domain, the Layer 3 switch (or other gateway device) checks its ARP cache for that connection.

If the address is in the cache, the packet is forwarded to its intended destination.

If the address is not found in the cache, a broadcast is sent to all other devices.

The intended device responds and its IP address and MAC address are stored in the cache.
