Crabs are interesting-looking creatures that live mostly in saltwater. Crabs are crustaceans. Crustaceans do not have a backbone. Instead, they have a hard outer shell called an exoskeleton. This hard shell helps protect the crab's body from predators looking for a meal. Crustaceans also have two pairs of antennae used to touch and feel what is in their path. Crabs have 10 legs. The front two legs are claws with powerful pinchers. These claws have two functions. They fight off predators and gather food. Once crabs find food, they use their claws to pick the food up and bring it to their mouth.
