Why is the introduction an extremely important part of your essay?

• Because it is where the hook goes

• Because it is the reader’s first impression of your writing 

• Because it introduces your topic

• Because it includes your final judgment and what’s next

What do you have to do with MOST of what you have learned about introductions in the past?

• Throw it out

• Use it but in a more elaborate way

• Ignore it since you don’t need an introduction anymore

• Use it exactly how it has been taught to you in the past

What is a thesis?

• The first sentence of the essay, which introduces the topic

• The major examples of the essay, which are summarized in the introduction

• The main idea of the essay, which shows the reader’s intentions

• The main claim and list of supporting reasons

Where does the thesis go in your introduction?

• In the first sentence of the introduction

What is context?

• Lenses people put in their eyes in order to see without glasses

What is an allusion?

• A slight of hand trick performed by a magician

• An explicit (direct) literary reference to a famous person, place, or event

What is NOT a “hook” strategy that can still be used in this class, which you may have been taught in the past?

• Simple, rhetorical questions

• A well-known quotation

If you want to begin your essay with a quote, what MUST be provided?

• An in-text citation, formatted in MLA style

• Context- who said it (if known) and a connection to the topic of the essay

• The approximate date when the line was said or written

• Who the original audience of the line was

Why is it a good idea to stay away from numbers and statistics in THIS class?

• Because Mr. Newman hates math

• Because numbers are too hard for people to understand

• Because it is unlikely you will remember them and numbers tend to be bland

• Because the examiners can Google any statistics you use and if you’re wrong you will automatically fail the exam
