A WEEK IN THE MILL

All Jana wanted was to arrive at her chemistry class on time, but there were so many students in the hallway that she came to a stop and could go no further. She was stuck and would be late

to class.

Jermone had never thought of street art as “real” art until his class did a walking field trip through the city. Instead of touring an art museum, the class walked the streets looking at art on buildings, bridges, and utility boxes. It made Jermone feel so alive!

Staci’s pricing strategy was holding her back. She had a great product, but people felt it was too expensive. Staci took customer feedback seriously, reduced the price of her product, and reintroduced it to the market. Even with charging less, Staci was still making more money than her expenses.

Tammie wished she hadn’t let her bedroom become so messy. After spending an hour just taking dishes back to the kitchen and putting dirty clothes in the laundry, she still had to vacuum, dust, and hang up clothes. It was a miserable way to spend a Saturday morning.

On her tour to a small town in Guatemala, Sarahi visited a small factory where workers made colorful rugs using hand looms. She was able to pick out the colors she wanted and take home a unique souvenir.

The teacher’s stern and unsmiling face showed the seriousness of the moment. Kara needed to start studying and turning in her work, or she would be taking 9th grade English again. The teacher said that Kara had to do better if she wanted to pass.

Carlos was happy to find a job paying at least $15 an hour, even if it meant he would be lifting heavy granite countertops and loading them onto a truck before delivering them to a work site. It was hard work, and his muscles ached at the end of the day.

Sometimes India didn’t know how she got it all done: classes in the morning, working at the ice cream shop in the afternoon, babysitting her brother and sister, then going back to her dorm to study at night.
