MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

5 mins • 1 pt

The days crawled by like sap creeping down a tree trunk. I kept waiting for the tickets to arrive. Every day, I'd run to the mailbox thinking they would be there waiting for me. I would watch the white postal truck make its way down our property from the main road. I would think to myself, Please be there; please be there!

I had ordered tickets to the concert five weeks and two days ago. The ad said that I would receive the tickets in four to six weeks. At the four-week mark, I almost jumped out of my skin when I saw a small blue box in the mail. It turned out to be replacement checks for my mom. I wanted to kick the mailbox over when I realized it wasn't for me.

How does the narrator feel at the very end of the passage?

The Violin Player

Richmond wanted to become a violin player. His mother wanted to encourage him, but she could not afford to pay for lessons. She placed Richmond in violin classes at his school. In the first class, he learned how to hold the bow and violin correctly. Later, his class learned to play notes and chords. Richmond's teacher said that he was talented. She told him to practice more over the summer.

His mother found a student at the local music academy who agreed to teach Richmond more about the violin in exchange for home-cooked food. Richmond enjoyed working with the student and learned to play some of his favorite songs. He played the violin well and wanted to spend more time studying it.

Richmond wanted to go to a summer camp for violin players. His mother came up with ways to raise money to send him to camp. She held a bake sale at their house. The next week the family had a garage sale. By this time, Richmond and his mom almost had enough money. Richmond's mom decided to have a concert where Richmond would play. The concert was a success, and they raised enough money to send Richmond to camp.

Richmond had a lot of fun at the summer camp and went to a performing arts school to learn more about the violin. After he went to college, he became a teacher to help students who loved music just like him. His great talent made others love music, too. In fact, Richmond's little sister learned to love music from watching him play the violin.

What did Richmond learn from his first violin class?

how to hold the violin correctly

how to play his favorite songs

how to teach students to play

how to go to a summer camp

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

5 mins • 1 pt

Dear Diary:

Today was my first day at Sleepaway Camp. When we arrived, Jen, my counselor, was waiting for my parents and me. She was very friendly. She took us to my cabin and showed my parents where I'd be sleeping. My parents helped me start unpacking, and then they were on their way.

After I finished unpacking, Jen introduced me to my bunkmates. There were 9 other girls in my bunk. They all seemed nice. Jen told us that we would have a schedule for each day, but since this was our first day, she wanted to show us around the camp. She said that we should change into our swimsuits in case we decided to go swimming.

First, Jen took us to the "mess hall." This was where we would eat. Then, she took us to the infirmary where we would go if we were sick. Next, we went to the lake. There were many things to do. We could swim, canoe, sail, or fish. Since it was quite warm, Jen asked if we wanted to go for a swim. We all shouted, "Yes!" After swimming for a while, we rested and talked about our lives at home. It was fun getting to know everyone. Then, Jen led us back to the bunk so we could get some rest before dinner. So far, it looks like I am going to have a really fun summer. I can't wait for tomorrow. Maybe I'll get to canoe for the first time!

Talk to you later,

Annie

What was the first thing Jen did when Annie and her parents arrived at camp?

She showed them where Annie would be staying.

She showed them the lake.

She introduced them to Annie’s bunkmates.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

5 mins • 1 pt

Mariana wanted to ride her bike without training wheels. She asked her dad to teach her how to ride a bike. Mariana was doing very well. She thought riding on two wheels was easy.

"Daddy, let go! I can do this," Mariana said.

"Are you sure?" Dad asked.

"Yes! I'm fine," she said.

Dad let go and Mariana raced off down the street. She was so excited to be riding her big-kid bike. Suddenly, a cat jumped in front of her bike. Mariana realized she didn't know how to stop! She swerved around the cat and hit the curb with her bike. Mariana fell off the bike and skinned her knees. Dad came rushing over.

"Mariana! Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Dad asked.

"I think I'm okay, Daddy," Mariana said. "But maybe I should learn how to stop before I learn how to go."

Mariana tried to avoid hitting the cat that jumped out in front of her, and she fell down. When she fell, she skinned her knees.

Mariana's dad helped her learn how to ride a two-wheeled bike. Mariana took off down the street but fell down when she could not stop.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

5 mins • 1 pt

"Tommy, your history teacher says you are failing this quarter," Coach Snead said. Tommy Blake was his star running back. "That's the third time he's told me. He says you aren't doing your homework."

"Ah, coach, I've got too much to do," Tommy replied. "We've got that big game with Hamden. I do a lot of stuff with my community. I'm helping my little brother with his model train. I've got other classes, too. History takes a lot of time."

Coach Snead put his hand on Tommy's shoulder. "I can see you've got too much on your plate, so I'm cutting you from the squad as of now. That way you'll have plenty of time to take care of your school work and your community responsibilities."

Tommy laughed as he said, "Right; you're going to cut the league-leading running back before the biggest game of the season."

"That's right, son, that's what I'm going to do."

"You'll lose the game."

"You are much more important to me than a game," Coach Snead said. "Besides I've got six guys out there that would love to start the biggest game of the year."

"What do you mean 'you are much more important than a game'?"

"We're a team, Tommy, and teams have rules. One of our rules is that everybody has to be passing all their classes during the season. You're not doing that, despite having several chances to bring up your grades. If I let you off just because there's a big game, then you and everybody else on the team will learn that my rules don't matter. At least they don't matter for special people, like league-leading running backs. If I let you get away with this, you'd learn the wrong lesson, and that would hurt you in the future."

Which lesson can be learned from this story?

Skill is more important than courage in sports.

To be a team player, you have to compromise.

Winning is the most important thing.

On a team, no player is above the rules.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

Student of the Week

Sandra looked over her note cards and practiced her speech in her head one last time. She had to give a presentation to her class about Abraham Lincoln. Her project partner, Joey, was sitting calmly next to her. He didn't care about the project at all. He had barely helped her do the research at the library. Now, she was going to have to give the presentation all by herself. Joey was just going to show the class the poster Sandra had made.

As Sandra and Joey walked to the front of the room, the door to the classroom opened, and the principal walked in. All the students smiled at Mrs. Peters. Everyone thought she was a great principal. She had arrived to observe the class's activities for the day.

Sandra gave the presentation with the principal watching. The principal seemed impressed with how well Sandra knew the information. Then, Joey showed the class the poster. He tried to explain what the pictures meant, but he did not know the information well. When the other students asked a question about Lincoln, Joey just shrugged his shoulders. Sandra was able to give the answer from memory of what she read.

At the end of class, the principal went to Sandra's desk. "I'm very impressed with how hard you worked on your project," she said. "I'd like to make you Student of the Week."

Which lesson can be learned from this story?

Group assignments are hard.

Group assignments are hard.

Show off for the principal.

Hard work will be rewarded.
