Sadie was new at school. Her mom told her not to worry; she’d make a new

friend in no time! But, that day at school, Sadie felt shy. She ate by herself at

lunch and walked alone down the hall. She wished someone would talk to her.

The next morning on the bus, she sat alone in the big, brown seat. She looked

up and saw a nervous looking girl walking slowly down the aisle. “You can sit

here!” Sadie offered with a smile. The girl grinned back and sat down next to

Sadie. “Thanks!” said the girl, “I’m new here and was worried I wouldn’t

make any friends!” Sadie felt excited for her second day at school.

Lou scampered through the park. All the other squirrels were busy

gathering nuts for winter, but Lou wanted to enjoy the last warm days of

the season instead. A few days later, the air turned cool. Lou’s tummy

growled. He set out to find some nuts to store for winter. Lou could not

find any nuts. All of the other squirrels had already gathered them. Lou

worried. He wished he had collected some food to eat.

• Always collect enough nuts for yourself to eat.

• Do your work first. Then you can play.

Orville and Wilbur Wright tried for years to build an airplane. The broth-

ers opened a bicycle shop and saved all of their money to work on their

dream. They made kites that didn’t fly and glider planes that didn’t glide.

They kept trying until they succeeded in building a glider plane that

traveled over 600 feet in 1902. In 1903, after many trials and many

errors, Orville Wright flew in a flying machine for 12 seconds. This first

airplane helped pave the way for modern day air travel.

• Never give up on your dreams.
