SURGICAL TEAM

S/he is responsible for the preoperative diagnosis of the patient, for performing the operation, and for providing the patient with postoperative surgical care and treatment.

He or she is a highly skilled medical doctor who administers anesthesia to patients before surgical procedures. S/he monitors, evaluates, oversees, and provides a continual assessment of the patient's care before, during, and after surgery.

He or she anticipates the needs of the surgical team and, during an operation, assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, holding open incisions, stopping bleeding, and closing the incision, among many other technical tasks.

S/he assists the surgical team by donning sterile masks, gloves, and gowns, as well as aiding the physician by passing instruments during surgery. Following the operation, s/he clears away the tools and prepares the patient for transport to the recovery room.

The unsterile part of the surgical team who provides additional supplies and sterile instruments as needed during the operation and assist the other team members in monitoring the status of the patient or helping with the repositioning of the patient during the procedure.

He or she could be a resident doctor, a surgical technologist, an intern, or a nurse. He or she is trained to retract tissues and suction body fluids to help expose the surgical site. There are some instances where their help may not be needed if the surgery is not extensive.
