Fluency or Accuracy Focused Grammar Activities

Learners (Ls) are given cue cards that show specified roles. Ls communicate with each other to solve a problem through the roles given.

Ls practice dialogues in pairs. One Learner (L) becomes a monitor to make sure the correct language is used with correct intonation. Ls change roles and practise the dialogue.  Teacher (T) walks around and corrects mistakes or misuses where necessary.

Ls are given a gap-fill exercise. They work in pairs or groups and  decide to use the correct language given in a box to make meaningful sentences. T gets answers from different pairs or groups and elicits peer or  whole class feedback.

Sentence completion: Ls complete the sentences given to them with their own information adding their own details. For example; One of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever done is…….. The most successful actor/actress I know is…...because…… The most entertaining TV show I’ve ever watched is….because….

Use the correct form of the adjectives below making comparisons.

Ls act out a dialogue in which a customer wants to get a refund for a faulty product bought from there. Ls have practiced a set of language to ask questions, to ask for help, clarification and description of a problem.

Ls design an ideal school for different ages (different groups focus on different age groups) considering the lessons, teachers, teaching methods, learning materials, classrooms, assessment, projects…..etc. Then, they present their projects to the class and choose/adapt the best design for themselves.

‘Yes/No’ competition: Ls write Yes/No questions. T collects them and puts them in a bag. Ls in pairs come to the front of the class and take turns to ask questions within a short time span-1or 2 minutes. The aim is to ask questions quickly and to answer them without using Yes/No. The L who uses ‘Yes/No’ sits down and another L comes to the front. This continues until all the Ls take turns or within the specified time span depending on the purpose or time of the lesson.
