A Long time ago, there lived on a hill Philemon and his wife Baucis. Once, they lived prosperously, but a tragedy changed the couple's life. This is the story.

Once, Philemon and Baucis were very wealthy. they had hives of bees from which they got honey and an old cow that gave them milk that they could sell. Also, they had large fields in which grain was cultivated. they spent their lives with happiness and often had great feasts together with their neighbors and friends. unfortunately, they reluctantly shared happiness or belongings with the poor.

One day, an old beggar with a stick in his hand stood before Philemon's house, asking food and drinks. Philemon and his wife were busy preparing a feast for a great person who would visit their village, so they didn't care about him. Delicious food and drinks had already been prepared, but they let the beggar leave their house in hunger and thirst.

When the feast was over, the beggar reappeared. Again he begged Philemon for some food, but no more leftovers.

Sadness overwhelmed the beggar's face. Then he stuck his stick into the ground and then asked Philemon to pull it out. Philemon try to pull it out, but failed. His wife and neighbors tried to pull it out too, but in vain.

Then, the beggar pull it out. Suddenly an earthquake shook the earth and ruined all house in Philemon's village. He and other people could save themselves, but lost their property in a moment.
