Issue: High school drop out.

You might begin by coming out with the hypothesis; the students drop out of high school because of low self-esteem. Design an intervention program to raise self-esteem. You set up an experiment controlling for as many variables as possible and then measure the results. What approach are you taking here?

You would not test theory, set up experiment or measure anything. You might be interested in understanding the experience of dropping out, interested in discovering which factors differentiate dropouts from those who may have been at risk but who nevertheless completed high school. Interview, observe and review documents, personal diaries, reports.

You might be interested in how the social institution of school is structured such that the interests of some members and classes of society are preserved and perpetuated at the expense of others. You would investigate the way in which schools are structured, the mechanism (attendance, tests, grade levels) that re-produce certain patterns of response and so on. You might also design and carry out the study in collaborations with high school non-completers themselves. This analysis of the underlying socioeconomic, political, and cultural causes of the problem is designed to result in collective action to address the problem.

You would question and disrupt the dichotomies (for example completer-non-completer, successful-unsuccessful, graduate-dropout) inherent in the research problem. The findings of this study might be presented in the form of narratives, field notes, and creative formats such as drama and poetry. It would be important to present multiple perspectives, multiple voices and multiple interpretations of what it means to be a high school dropout.
