OPEN ENDED QUESTION
3 mins • 1 pt
Explain on a MICROSCOPIC scale, how heat transfers when we combine hot and cold water.
Evaluate responses using AI:
OFF
Answer explanation
The average kinetic energy (temperature) of hot water is higher than the average kinetic energy of cold water. When the two samples are mixed, the particles of the hot water begin to collide with the particles of the cold water. After some collisions and some time, eventually the average kinetic energy of the cold and hot water mixed will be the same. The thermal energy of the hot water is higher, so it will transfer some heat energy to the cold water, eventually reaching thermal equilibrium.
