(7) Historians doesn’t know about Hypatia’s mother. (8) Because of her father, Hypatia studied and taught math, astronomy, and philosophy. (9) Theon taught Hypatia math and public speaking. (10) She helped her father update old textbooks. (11) They added new information in geometry, algebra, and astronomy. (12) Hypatia had a special skill of simplifying complex ideas into smaller bits she made difficult subjects easier to understand. (13) Her notes influenced mathematicians and astronomers for hundreds of years. (14) Until Hypatia was an adult, she taught math and astronomy to students from all over the world. (15) She taught simply based on what people already knew. (16) She taught people how to use an astrolabe. (17) It is a portable device that can measure the angle between the horizon and a star or a planet. (18) Astrolabe helped sailors figure out the time of day as well as their location on the ocean. (19) It was used for over 200 years. (20) Many of her theories are still used today.
