MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

5 mins • 20 pts

11 Samantha looked to her right. She could see her elderly neighbor, Ms. Walker, standing there. She was staring at the pile of rubble that used to be her home. Samantha sprinted over to Ms. Walker and hugged her tightly, thankful she survived this disaster. Other neighbors joined the embrace. “Don’t worry, Ms. Walker,” Samantha’s dad said. “We will help you rebuild.”

12 The neighbors started cleaning up Ms. Walker’s yard, searching for possessions the tornado may have left behind. Samantha smiled watching as everyone came together to help their neighbor. She thought to herself, “I can’t believe something so beautiful could come out of something so disastrous.”  Samantha picked up a shovel and went to work on her neighbor’s house.

In paragraphs, 11-12, Samantha’s reaction to Ms. Walker’s home shows that Samantha?

cares about Ms. Walker

is annoyed that everyone must help Ms. Walker

has never met Ms. Walker

is more concerned about her house than Ms. Walker's house

The Story of the Lightning and the Thunder A Nigerian Folktale

1 Long ago, Thunder and Lightning lived on Earth with all the other people. Thunder was a mother sheep and her son, a ram, was Lightning. Because of the ram’s temper, the king made them live at the far end of the town, as far as possible from other people.

2 Whenever the ram got angry, he would strike with his flash of light and burn down houses and trees. He managed to damage many farms, and sometimes he even hurt people. Whenever Lightning did these things, his mother shouted at him in a loud, booming voice. She yelled at him to stop, but Lightning did not care what Thunder said and continued to do damage on purpose.

3  At last the people could not stand it any longer and complained to the king. So the king demanded that the sheep and her son leave the town and live far away. This did not do much good. The ram continued to get angry and burned the trees. Sometimes, the flames still spread to the farms and burned them to the ground.

4 So the people complained again. This time, the king banished both Lightning and Thunder from the Earth and commanded them to live in the sky, where the people on Earth would be safe from Lightning’s destruction.

5 Ever since moving to the sky, when Lightning is angry, he strikes as before, but now you can hear his mother, Thunder, roaring and telling him to stop. Sometimes, if the mother is too far from her son, you will see him striking in anger, but her voice is nowhere to be heard.

Thunder's reaction to Lightning shows that she is.?

proud of the way her son is acting

mad at the king for making them move

enjoys being on the Earth with the people

frustrated with her son, Lightning
