Middle Ages Vocab Review

Also known as the medieval period, the time from roughly the 5th to the 15th century.  The period between ancient Rome and the Renaissance.

The basic government and society in Europe during the Middle Ages was based around the feudal system. Small communities were formed around the local lord and the manor. The lord owned the land and everything in it. He would keep the peasants safe in return for their service. The lord, in return, would provide the king with soldiers or taxes.

These rulers, who were next in charge after the king. This system of sharing the power worked out well for the them and also for the king. They gained a large piece of land, known as a fief, and the power to rule it.
