Rav and Shmuel Part 1

When Rav and Shmuel say that כל שיש בו מחמשת המינים

gets a mezonot, they are referring to a case in which

• Mezonos are in the minority

• Mezonos are in the majority

When Rav and Shmuel say that כל שהוא מחמשת המינים

gets a mezonot, they are referring to a case in which

• Mezonos are in the majority

• Mezonos are in the minority

It's clear that כל שיש בו receiving a mezonos teaches us that...

• the five grains run by the regular rules of עיקר וטפל

• the five grains do not run by the regular rules of עיקר וטפל

The Gemara concludes that Rav and Shmuel are teaching us that...

• only the five grains receive a mezonos, but rice and millet do not, even when in the majority

• not only do the five grains receive a mezonos when in the majority, but rice and millet do as well

The Gemara brings a baraisa that says that one who eats rice or millet bread

מברך עליו תחילה וסוף כמעשה קדירה. The Gemara thinks that this means:

• that rice and millet bread receive the exact same brachos as Ma'aseh Kedeira, ie mezonos and al hamichya

• that rice and millet bread receive an adama and boreh nefashos, unlike ma'aseh kedeira

Rav and Shmuel's view defends itself by saying that what the baraisa really meant was that rice and millet share...

• qualities with one another that makes them very similar to ma'aseh kedeira

• the halacha of requiring a bracha rishona and acharona with Ma'aseh Kedeira, but not the exact same bracha

The Gemara then brings another baraisa which clearly lists rice as an example of Ma'aseh Kedeira. How does the Shmuel/Rav camp respond to this baraisa?

• by saying that this baraisa is authored by a minority view: R. Yochanan Ben Nuri

• by saying that this baraisa is authored by a majority view: Rabanan

R. Yochanan Ben Nuri is known for saying that:

• one who ate a chametz version of rice on Pesach is guilty of a serious violation of halacha

• one who ate an unleavened rice matzah would fulfill the mitzvah of matzah on Seder night
