Freedmen's Bureau

• Organization established in 1865 by Congress to help

  former black enslaved people and poor whites in the South.

• Bureau that former enslaved people had to register with to obtain their freedom.

• Organization that promoted the abolition of slavery.

• Organization that was established to help in rebuilding and reconstructing the Union post Civil War.

Ku Klux Klan (KKK)

• Organization established in 1865 by Congress to help former black enslaved people and poor whites in the South

• A secret society started by a group of Confederate Veterans

  that became an unofficial military force focused on reversing the federal government’s progressive Reconstruction Era-activities

• A groups of abolitionists that worked hard to promote the anti-slavery cause throughout the United States.

• People that describe themselves as not extreme or excessive in their political views

Radical Republicans

• Group of representatives that were very extreme with their views and believed the government should be tougher on the South for leaving the Union.

• People that describe themselves as NOT excessive or extreme in their political beliefs.

• A northerner who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era to take advantage of the unsettled conditions (to make money).

• Southerners that wanted the northerners to leave the South and allow the southern states to rule themselves.

Carpetbagger

• A term used to describe a wealthy elite who provided poor folks in the south with money during the Reconstruction era.

• A person who traveled around the North and South selling carpet to the wealthy elites to turn a profit.

• A northerner who moved to the south during the Reconstruction era to try to take advantage of the unsettled conditions

• A term given to former enslaved people who were now eligible citizens of the United States.

Sharecropping

• When a farmer that rents land has to give part of his crops to landowner as rent payment.

• Shared responsibility of the crops on a farm.

• Term used for taking care of your crops.

• A strong defensive position.

10 Percent Plan

• Agreement made after the president election of 1876 that allowed Hayes to become president as long as federal troops were removed from the South, ended Reconstruction.

• Lincoln's plan for reconstruction- when 10% of voters in the South took an oath of loyalty to the Union they could form a government and rejoin the Union.

• Compromise that would allow the Confederacy to keep some enslaved persons as long as they rejoined the Union.

• Jefferson Davis' plan for reconstruction- when 10% of voters in the South took an oath of loyalty to the Union they could form a government and rejoin the Union.

Scalawag

• A person from the northern states who went to the South after the Civil War to profit from the Reconstruction.

• The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. A civil rights organization.

• A white Southerner who worked with northern Republicans during Reconstructions, usually for personal profit. Used as an insult by Southern Democrats.
