What is the pH range that determines the placement of the NG in the stomach

NG tube insertion length is determined by measuring:

• from the nose to the xiphisternum

• from the earlobe to the xiphisternun

• from the tip of the nose to the earlobe to the xiphisternum

• from the earlobe to the tip of the nose to the xiphisternum

How long should a NG be used for?

• up to 8 weeks

• 2-4 weeks

• Until its not needed

• 3-6 weeks

Does the guidewire

• get left in position

• get removed after X-ray

• get removed once correct position is confirmed

• as soon as NEX length is reached

pH is checked when

• before starting feed/fluids/

  medications

• coughing violently

• new or unexplained respiratory symptoms

• if had physio

• slipped out

Using a smaller enteral syringe

• can cause no problems

• cause the NG tube to collapse

• can get aspirate better

• cause a gastric biopsy

Why must the PH paper or strips bear the CE mark?

• Complies with European Union legislation

• Certified Enteral

• manufactured for testing on human gastric aspirate

• It is a recommendation by NHS England

What could you do if you cannot get an aspirate?

• If the patient is not distressed with their breathing, don’t worry, proceed

• Give mouthcare,turn on left and then leave half an hour to an hour, then recheck

• Ask the doctor what to do

• Just hope it is in the right place and proceed

What position should a patient be ideally when administering medication or feed?

• Laid flat

• On their side

• Sat bolt right up at 90 degree only

• At least 30 degree
