Few sagas of the sea embody more romance and adventure than the United states Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. Under the command of Li Charles Wilkes, the flagship Vincennes and five other wooden sailing ships circumnavigated the globe in less than four years. The six vessels carried youthful crew. Many newly graduated naval officers and nine civilian scientists. This small naval squadron surveyed 280 islands and constructed 180 charts of the South Pasific, some of which were still being used as late as the 1940s. The expedition mapped 800 miles of the coast of the Oregon Territory, later to become the northwestern states of Oregon and Washington. It also explored some 1500 miles of antartic coast, completing a major survey that proved that Antartica was a continent. Equally important, the expedition collected and described natural history specimens from all parts of the globe-specimens that eventually became part of the National Museum of Natural History.

The story of the expedition begins in the early nineteenth century with John Cleves Symmes Jr. who believed that the world was hollow and that entrances to the inner world could be found by sailing to the South pole.
