The geology in the north and west of the UK is very different to that found in the south and east.

Most rock formation in southern/eastern parts of the UK are 'sedimentary' meaning they were once sea beds that have been raised above sea level. This also means they are softer and easily eroded.

Whereas much of the rock in the north/west is more resistant igneous and metamorphic rock.
