On page 20 of the Education Resource: "We didn't intend to speak in the show but we did need to create a whole world of sound for the performance that didn't exist in the book. It became obvious to us that you can't have a believable bustling city filled with people without some kind of chatter. So we made up a fictional language.

It is not used a lot but there are recurring words and phrases that the audience may come to understand, just as the traveller does. There are also some instances when I speak English. Just a few key moments when I speak a few key words. It was the best way to get the audience involved and for them to clearly know what the traveller is doing."
