Wellbeing and being ill are understood as distinct ways of being in the world. Health is not merely the

absence of disease or illness. A person may also have a disease but not an illness.

Nightingale outlined a procedure for measuring the body’s temperature through palpation of, or feeling for

the extremities in order to assess for heat loss. One of the nurse’s role is to manipulate the environment. Positioning

the patient, opening the windows, and regulating the room temperature are ways of maintaining this balance.
