Mafatu's Journey

People who worship courage are brave. Worship means to

• Value and believe in

• To not believe in something

• to be sad

• to be mad

He does not fish, swim, or canoe, and he is constantly teased and taunted over his fear of the sea. Taunted means to

• to be mad at someone

• to give someone a hug

• to love

• tease and make fun of someone

Mafatu believes that the sea gods are seeking vengeance against him because when Mafatu's mother drowned in the sea, they were cheated of Mafatu and still want his life too. Vengeance means to

• to learn how to sail

• To get revenge on someone

• To want the best for someone

• To be on a boat

Mafatu is adrift and is afraid that he will not make it home. Adrift means to

• falling asleep in the ocean

• sailing fast on a speedboat

• Floating and drifting in the sea with no direction on where to go.

• Crashing in the waves

He paddled until the muscles of his arms and shoulders ached in agony. Agony means

• to be without pain

• To stretch your muscles

• To have a cut on your leg

• To be in severe pain

His voice was thick and hoarse, his throat bursting with rage. Hoarse means

• raspy, scratchy and dry

• An animal you ride

• skinny

• to cry with anger

He sprang to his feet, flung back his head, spread wide his arms in defiance. " Do you hear me Moana? I am not afraid of you! Destroy me..." Defiance means

• To curl up in a ball and cry

• To be happy and laugh

• to purposefully not follow the rules or listen

• To be full of excitement
