MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION
30 sec • 1 pt
“Your birthday is exactly one week away, Holly,” said Mom at dinner. “What special treat would you like for Grandma to make for you?” The birthday tradition at my house is that the person celebrating the birthday gets to place a special order at Grandma’s bakery. Everyone started to shout out their
suggestions.
“Banana cream pie!” called my older sister, Trina.
“Turtle cheesecake!” Dad exclaimed.
“Cookie cake!” suggested little Braxton.
“Shush, everyone,” instructed Mom. “It’s Holly’s birthday so Holly gets to decide.”
“I want chocolate cupcakes with white filling and purple
frosting,” I announced.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION
30 sec • 1 pt
Four-year-old Valerie looked around frantically. She turned to her right. No mom. She turned to her left. No mom. She only saw racks of clothes with price tags attached to the sleeves. Immediately, she started to cry.
A woman appeared. “Little girl, are you lost?”
Valerie didn’t know what to say. She knew she wasn’t supposed to talk to strangers.
“Do you know where your mommy is?” the woman asked.
Valerie shook her head and cried harder.
“C’mon, let’s go to the front of the store. The workers will make an announcement over the loudspeaker. That’s the best way to find her.” The woman held out her hand. Valerie held it and they walked together to the front of the store.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

“What am I going to do with you?” Bart’s mom asked him. She was not pleased. She had received an email from his teacher earlier that afternoon. Mrs. Morten had informed her that Bart had not turned in his homework three times this week. Bart looked down at the floor. He mumbled, “I don’t know.”
This response seemed to anger his mom even more. “Well, here’s one thing I know. You need to call your coach right now and
explain why you’re grounded, and why you won’t be able to attend the game Friday.”

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

The phone rang at the Hanson house. “I’ll get it!” Brooke called out as she rushed to the phone to answer it. She was expecting a phone
call from her friend, Izzy, about getting together later that afternoon.
“Hello?” Brooke answered.
“Well hello, Miss Brooke! How are you this fine day?” the voice on the other end asked.
Brooked recognized that greeting. Only one person ever said that.
“Hi, Uncle Kevin,” Brooke replied. “What are you doing?”
“Well, I’m sitting in my office at work, and I thought of you!”
“Really? Why did you think of me?”
“Well, I have a problem that I think you can help me fix. I need some color in my new office. I was wondering if you would draw me some
pictures that I can hang in here.”
“I can do that for you, Uncle Kevin,” Brooke replied.
“I’ll thank you with a brownie sundae the next time I see you,” Kevin promised.
“Well, if you insist,” Brooke responded with a smile.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

Rain hit the glass with such force that it was difficult to hear the music Mrs. Carson had turned on for my classmates and me to listen to as we finished our writing.
“Do you have to walk home today?” my best friend whispered in a worried voice.
I nodded my head as I glanced at the clock. 2:50.
“Do you have an umbrella?”
I shook my head. I had forgotten my umbrella in Dad’s car that morning. Ugh! Unless this rain stops in the next ten minutes, I am going to
get drenched!

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION
30 sec • 1 pt
The doorbell rang. “Were you expecting anyone, Meg?” Mr. Lucas asked his wife.
“No, I wasn’t,” Mrs. Lucas replied as she walked toward the door. She peered out the peephole in their front door. She could see a little girl
in a tan outfit on the other side of their door.
“Aha! It’s that time of year again, isn’t it!?” she said with a smile. She opened the front door.
“Would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies?” the young girl asked.
“Well, what kinds do you have to offer this year?” Mrs. Lucas asked.
The little girl showed Mrs. Lucas the order form with the photos and descriptions of cookie varieties available. It was clear to Mrs. Lucas
that this girl had practiced before coming to their door. Mrs. Lucas was touched by the girl’s hard work, preparation, and desire to sell as many
boxes as possible. She couldn’t resist ordering five boxes from her.
The girl soon left, ready to go after her next big sale. Mrs. Lucas closed the door and smiled. It seems like just yesterday that I was that
young girl!
