ELA Routines 2023

What should I do when I first walk in to ELA class?

• Check the front TV for where I need to sit and what materials I need.

• Get my folder and notebook.

• Check all the seats to see where my friends are sitting.

• Walk around the room until I am reminded 3 times to follow directions on the board.

The first 10 minutes of ELA class is almost always...

• a meeting to find out what we are doing today.

• time to go to the bathroom.

• time to read my book.

• when I catch up with my friends about what happened at lunch.

ELA homework is almost always...

• to read for 20 minutes.

• to finish class work.

• to write for 20 minutes.

• there is no homework in ELA.

Why does ELA start with reading for 10 minutes?

• So we can maintain a reading life.

• So we consistently read books.

• To start class in a familiar, calm, and productive way.

• All of the above.

My ELA notebook and folder should always be stored...

• with me.

• in my locker.

• in my bedroom at home.

• in the bins in class labeled with my course number.

Why do Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. Shilinski give out stickers to some people at the start of class?

• Some students are their favorites.

• Stickers are given to students who have arrived on time, followed all directions on the board, and are reading their books.

• The stickers are for extra credit.

• Stickers allow students to go to the bathroom.

If I need to leave ELA to go to the bathroom I should...

• Ask Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. Shilinski if I can go.

Parallel teaching is a co-teaching structure that Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. Shilinski use often. Why do they teach this way?
