It is the plot of percentage of each participants remembering each words against the position the word is on the list. It was studied by having participants listen to a list of words, than writing these words down in order in which they heard them. Participants had an easier time recalling words said at the beginning (primacy effect) and words said at the end (recency effect). The primacy effect explains the short-term memory and the need for rehearsal to keep information within it. The words at the beginning had more time to be rehearsed hence strengthening their place in short-term memory. And the recency effect because the words that were recently presented where still in short-term memory and easy to recall. The recency effect was further studied in an experiment where participants where presented a list of words but had to count to a certain number before recalling it. Counting inhibited the ability to rehearse the items. And the words remembered were the one that were last said, showing that recency effect is about the most recent words remaining in short-term memory.
