What is a symbol?

• An instrument in a band that the drummer usually plays.

• An object that gives us directions to where we want to go.

• A picture that reminds us of something or makes us picture something in our heads.

What is a sign?

• An object used to hold a religious book.

• An object used to give information or instructions.

• An object used to help you sing songs.

What does significant mean?

• Being worthy of attention and having an important meaning.

• Being worthy of money and having lots of it.

• Being worthy of being worshipped.

What do signs and symbols do?

• Give information, instruction or warnings.

• Change your mind about what you believe.

• Tell people off.

Why do religions have signs and symbols?

• Religious symbols make people feel powerful.

• Religious symbols remind people of all the good things in their lives so make them go to church or their place of worship.

• Religious symbols create a sense of belonging to a religion and remind followers of their beliefs.

Where are religious signs and symbols found?

• In the buildings of emergency services.

• In sacred texts, artwork and religious buildings.

• In every house in the UK.
