Causes of the Revolution pt. 1

Prevented colonists from living west of the Appalachian Mountains. Made colonists live where it was easier for the British to control them (and collect taxes). 10,000 soldiers sent by the King to the colonies to make sure people followed this law.

Lowered the tax on molasses, but put a three-cent tax on imported sugar. Britain hoped this would stop colonists from smuggling goods.

Taxed all printed materials in the colonies. Newspapers, wills, playing cards all needed a “stamp” to show the tax had been paid. In March 1766, Parliament repealed, or cancelled this law.

Parliament passed this law to tax imported goods such as glass, tea and paper. The tax was paid when the goods arrived, before they were brought inside the colonies. Protests & boycotts by colonists against these taxes began immediately.

This was a war between the British & the French over land and trade. The British won, but it was expensive & caused the British to tax the colonists to pay for the debt.
