One of your parents informs you their child has a medical diagnosis and they want a 504 plan. Do they automatically qualify for one?

• Absolutely!!

• Only if the student goes to the clinic before school each day and during the day and after school.

• Yes. If it affects their academics and is educationally relevant.

• No

During the first marking period an intermediate level student does not finish their class work or assessments within a reasonable time. The student does not have a 504 or IEP. How do I get the student "extended time?"

• Just give it to the student. It's okay.

• Complete an academic concern form to bring it to the attention of the MTSS Team.

• Think to yourself - "I wish the school the student transferred from took care of this" during the school day.

• Email your team leader to express your concerns.

One of my students is continuously disrupting my class by calling out and aggravating other students. These behaviors occur throughout the school day. What should I do?

• Make Coach Brooks a "Favorite Contact" on your phone.

• Write a referral.

• Ignore the behavior. It will go away.

• Complete a Behavior Intervention Form while bringing it to the attention of admin or guidance.

Are there any differences between a 504 plan and an IEP?

• Maybe.

• One provides accommodations while the other does not.

• A 5 and 4 plan can only be used with multiples of 9.

• Several similarities but one provides ESE classroom services while the other does not.

Then purpose of MTSS is:

• To add more paperwork to an already overwhelming amount of paperwork.

• To provide supports to students who are not making sufficient progress in Tier 1 for academics and behavior.

• Get a child an IEP if they are on Tier 2.

• To exclude students from ESE.
