Process design

• is a group of related tasks with specific inputs and outputs

• specifies the type of work stations to be used, the machines and equipment necessary to carry out the operations

• defines the appearance of the product, sets standards for performance, specifies which materials are to be used, and determines dimensions and tolerances

The process design is not concerned with the following:

• characteristics of the product or service offered to the customers.

• whether equipment and machines should be of special purpose or general purpose

• kind of labor skills available, amount of labor available and their wage rates

• absenteeism and labor turnover

• method of handling materials economically

Process decisions

• should maximize throughput time

• should minimize cycle time

• should reflect how the firm has chosen to compete in the marketplace

Standardization

• enables company to improve its profitability significantly by careful variety reduction

• enables company to improve its'profitability significantly by increasing variety incrementally

• causes confusion, misunderstandings, and eventually, inefficiency

The principle of parallelism means

• the simultaneous execution of individual parts of the production process as applied to different parts of a common batch of parts

• the subsequent execution of individual parts of the production process as applied to different parts of a common batch of parts

• that all individual production processes and the single production process of a certain type of product are repeated after set periods of time

The principle of Proportionality means

 

• uniform and full loading of all types of equipment to be able to perform production program in the right amount

The principle of rhythmicity means

According to this strategy facilities produces high volume and low-variety. The specialized nature of facility requires high fixed cost, but low variable costs reward high facility utilization.
