La Salle’s expedition shipwrecked near Matagorda Bay, Texas in 1685. He and the other survivors quickly built Fort St. Louis to protect themselves from unfriendly Karankawa. They then tried to find the Mississippi River on foot, unaware that it was still hundreds of miles away. On one of those trips, La Salle’s men, unhappy with his leadership, staged a mutiny against him. Sometime later, Fort St. Louis was destroyed by the Karankawa. The Natives took five captives and killed the rest of the shipwrecked survivors. Due to these events, Spain recognized France as a potential threat to their North American empire. Soon, construction of mission San Francisco de los Tejas began.
