IF is used:

• If this happens, the result is seen

• The situation can occur

• There is a chance the situation will happen but it might not happen.

• The situation will not happen unless you know the truth

WHEN is used:

• There is a chance the situation might occur

• We are sure the situation it's going to happen

• it is the result of something else happening first

• You know the result will not happen
