Bilbao is a city in northern Spain. For most of the 20th century, it wasn't known for anything exciting. Not many tourists visited the city, and when companies there began to close, many people moved to other cities for new jobs.

In 1991, the population of Bilbao was decreasing, and the city was losing money. The city officials needed a way to bring people to the city, so they decided to bring an amazing museum to Bilbao. The officials of Bilbao asked the Guggenheim to put a museum in their city. The Guggenheim officials liked the idea immediately, and in 1992, a location for the new museum was chosen in the city.

Architect Frank Gehry presented his idea for the new Guggenheim Museum in 1993. His design was selected, and work began eight months later. When the new Guggenheim was completed, huge numbers of tourists started coming to Bilbao. Many of them were interested in seeing the new building's design because it was very different from the conservative and traditional styles of the past.

Soon, Bilbao needed a new airport. The number of daily flights to the city increased, and the old airport was too small. In addition, there weren't enough hotels for all the tourists, so several large hotels were built near the museum. In only a few years, as the Guggenheim Museum created new jobs for the people of the city, the number of people living in Bilbao increased. Now many more people have definitely heard of Bilbao.

What was the city of Bilbao known for during most of the 20th century?

Nothing exciting

Tourist attractions

Job opportunities
