What is a Clergy?

• Roman Catholic Priests who ran the Church and some aspects of the Country.

• Members of the Royal Family

• A wave of senseless panic that spread through the French countryside after the storming of the Bastille in 1789

The 1st Estate

• the clergy of the church; 1% of the population; owned 10% of the land; paid no taxes

• A pledge made by the members of France's National Assembly in 1789, in which they vowed to continue meeting until they had drawn up a new constitution

• Anyone suspected to be an enemy would be arrested.

2nd Estate

• Queen of France (as wife of Louis XVI) who was unpopular her extravagance and opposition to reform contributed to the overthrow of the monarchy

• "The Nobles"---Makeup 2% of the population, but owns 20% of the land. Paid no taxes, held highest offices in government. Controlled the most wealth.

• When the national assembly discovers Louis XVI's plan to send soldiers to station near them, they go to a near by prison, free the prisoners, and steal the weapons

The Nobles

• Members of the Royal Family

• the clergy of the church; 1% of the population; owned 10% of the land; paid no taxes

• (1793-94) during the French Revolution when thousands were executed for "disloyalty"

3rd Estate

• The most radical political faction of the French Revolution who ruled France during the Reign of Terror.

• Established and led by Robespierre, fixed bread prices and nationalized some businesses. Basically secret police and also controlled the war effort. Instigated the Reign of Terror.

• Peasants, 95% of the population, paid all the taxes to France, had no say in the government.

Peasants

• King of France, weak leader, executed during the French Revolution

• A person who does farm work, growing just enough to live on.

• An assembly of representatives from all three of the estates, or social classes, in France.

King Louis XVI

• The leader of the Committee of Public Safety that governed France. He centralized the administration of France and helped expand the Reign of Terror.

• A machine for beheading people, used as a means of execution during the French Revolution.

• King of France, weak leader, executed during the French Revolution

Marie Antoinette

• Queen of France (as wife of Louis XVI) who was unpopular her extravagance and opposition to reform contributed to the overthrow of the monarchy
