DRAG AND DROP QUESTION

Media Image

 (a)   was the GOVERNOR (leader put in charge) of the Roanoke colony. Eleanor Dare was his daughter and so he was Virginia Dare's (b)   . Around 1587, he returned to England in order to get more supplies for Roanoke. Unfortunately, John White was unable to return to Roanoke for (c)   more years. When John White finally arrived back to Roanoke (around 1590), he found no sign of the colonists (or his family) and the only clue left behind was the word, (d)   , carved into a tree.

(hint: look at this picture!)

John White
grandfather
three
CROATOAN
uncle
five
John Smith
CHEROKEE

Answer explanation

Media Image

The CROATOAN was a local Native-American tribe--- who lived further south on the island of Hatteras, North Carolina.

Many people speculate ("believe") that the Lost Colonists eventually went to live with & assimilated (joined & intermarried) with the Croatoan Indians-- in order to survive.

John White was unable to spend a lot of time searching for the missing colonists because his ship crew had to quickly get back to England. John White NEVER found out what happened to his missing family. #truestory #tragictale
