define World War II

World War II began on the first of September when Germany invaded Poland, and was between a multitude of countries, but the most influential were Germany, Italy, Japan, France, Britain, the U.S., the Soviet Union, and China.  Germany, Italy, and Japan were known as the Axis Powers, while France, Britain, the U.S., the Soviet Union, and China were known as the Allied Powers.  The Axis and Allied Powers were not limited to the countries that have been mentioned so far, though those were the ones that were the most active during the war.  There were many conflicts in Europe, as that was where the main conflict of the war was at, though there were also conflicts in Asia, Africa, and some other places, like Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  During the War, France was invaded and was liberated on June 6, 1944.  D-Day took place in Normandy, France and was an attack from water to land (an amphibious assault), by the Allied Powers.  Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945, Italy fell apart during 1945, and Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945 after it was bombed with atomic bombs.  This was the bloodiest war in history.

define Gestapo

The Gestapo, known as the main tools for oppression and destruction of the Nazis, were a branch of the Nazi SS, which was called Schutzstaffel that would investigate any attacks against Germany or the Nazi party.  Some of these attacks were sabotage, spying, and many forms of treason.  The Gestapo used interrogation, deportation, torture, and observation to address these attacks.  Gestapo is an abbreviation in German for Geheime Staatspolizei, which means, “Secret State Police,” according to the Collins English Dictionary, which is cited below.  In 1936, the Gestapo Law was passed, which allowed the Gestapo to do whatever they wanted without any permission from the German Judiciary courts.  There were roughly 40,000 Gestapo officers in total to observe the around 8,000,000 people in Germany.  Now, the word “gestapo,” when it isn’t capitalized, means cruel, violent, or aggressive police forces and/or administrations.
