The way the plague spread, especially during the Black Death in the 14th century, was mostly because of fleas on black rats. These fleas carried a germ called Yersinia pestis, which caused different types of plagues. When the fleas bit infected rats and then bit humans, they passed on the germs. As people traded goods and cities grew, rats and fleas moved around more, spreading the plague. Besides, if someone had the pneumonic plague, it could spread between people through the air when they coughed.
